Is London sick of the gourmet burger? Can we take more greasy, calorie laden American junk food of hot dogs and cheesy chips? YES says LFM! (Who is eating for 2 at the moment and pretends this is an excuse to consume 1500 calories in one dish).

LFM was left in charge of organising a large, group gathering of 15 people (and 5 babies/toddlers) on Upper St, Islington. The perfect place was Meat Liquor – Not wallet breaking, casual and they take reservations! We were lucky to be blessed with sunny weather and the staff placed our rowdy group in the outside courtyard. Not plush, more alleyway stylee but perfect to let the toddlers roam around.

The burgers were extremely tasty and moist (although we have to say Patty and Bun win the gold medal for burgers in our opinion). Give the mac ‘n’ cheese croquettes a miss (bit stodgy). Chilli fries were indulgent and pretty spicy (adults only).

Go during the day with kids. In the evening, the venue feels dark and more like a nightclub. And the kids might freak out by the uber dark, UV light only toilets..not easy to do a nappy change in that lighting!

Sweet Thursday

Location: Islington

Cuisine: Italian (Pizza/Pasta)

Price Range: ££

LFM Score: 3/5

Bebe Friendly Score: 3/3

Situated in a quiet Islington neighbourhood is Sweet Thursday, serving woodfired pizzas and a large selection of wines.  The pizzas are good but not amazing (we’ve had better at Franco Manca)  – not a destination restaurant but somewhere to try if you are in the area. However, make it your destination if you have kids and want to have a semi-peaceful meal. That’s because the restaurant has a small but functional play area and the classic crayons etc (and high chairs/baby changing). Our little ones loved the ‘Micky’ pizzas! Adults loved the chocolate cake.

Brunch at Sweet Thursday is also pretty decent and they run special wine tasting and coffee tasting sessions which are extremely fun and informative.

Pho House

Location: Islington

Cuisine: Asian (Vietnamese)

Price Range: £

LFM Score: 4/5

Bebe Friendly Score: 2/3

We are glad to welcome Pho House to our neighbourhood. Instead of trekking to the authentic but rather dishevelled establishments of ‘Little Vietnam’ on Kingsland Road, we can swing by to Pho House which not only serves bona fide Vietnamese cuisine but in a clean, spacious,  baby friendly environment. Dishes are a couple of pounds more in comparison to Kingsland Road but we think it is worth paying. Stand out dish was the ‘Bun thit nuong, cha nem’ (bbq pork with Vietnamese spring rolls).

Firstly, the food is REALLY good here. However, the negatives have tinged our experience at Primeur. Firstly, it was so cold in the restaurant despite the heaters being on. We had to keep our coats on (and baby’s entire pram suit on). The restaurant is a converted car garage but that’s no excuse. Secondly, the portions are small. We are not big eaters but we felt hungry afterwards – main dishes came with zero carbs. Also, my razor clams were tasty but gritty with sand. Pricey for a neighbourhood restaurant. Lastly, bizarre booking system: I had to ‘tweet’ them via twitter to get a reservation!
